Another Shyamalan Bites The Dust: "The Watchers" Review

Published on 30 June 2024 at 16:33

The Watchers, the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, carries the unmistakable mark of her lineage. There's a clear attempt to weave a suspenseful narrative, laced with Shyamalan-esque reveals. However, the execution falls short, leaving viewers frustrated rather than thrilled.

The film's greatest strength lies in its atmosphere. The Irish countryside is beautifully rendered, with a pervasive sense of unease that lingers in the shadows. The creature design is equally impressive, hinting at a lurking horror that remains frustratingly unexplored.

Unfortunately, the screenplay fails to capitalize on this potential. The narrative unfolds through exposition-heavy dialogue, spoon-feeding information to the audience rather than allowing them to discover the mysteries organically. This heavy-handed approach combined with underdeveloped characters leads to a lack of emotional investment. The audience simply doesn't care enough about the characters' fates to feel genuine suspense.

There are glimpses of promise. A few jump scares are genuinely well-crafted, and the thematic threads of grief, identity, and folklore hold intrigue. However, these themes are delivered through clumsy metaphors and heavy-handed pronouncements, leaving them underdeveloped and ultimately unsatisfying.

While the PG-13 rating isn't inherently detrimental, the film struggles to generate true horror within its constraints. One can't help but wonder what "The Watchers" could have been with a more nuanced approach or a more mature rating.

In conclusion, The Watchers is a missed opportunity. It boasts a chilling atmosphere and intriguing creature design, but these elements are overshadowed by a weak script and underdeveloped characters. Fans of the Shyamalans' signature style might find some entertainment value, but for most viewers, The Watchers will likely flicker and fade from memory as quickly as the scares on screen.
